Playoffs?
There is nothing like the post season. The work put in all regular season, just to make it to the playoffs is what makes sports and in this case youth sports so great. Unfortunately the C.C.Y.F.L (Charles County Youth Football League) has dismissed playoff rounds and have gone straight to the Championship game to settle who is #1 in some of the weight classes. In the 85 lb Junior division; where SCB Green team won with a 8-2 record, will face off against Western Charles (7-3) in the Championship Game 11/12 at Northpoint HS @ 12:30pm. The Westlake team in that division is also 7-3 but unfortunately are on the outside looking in as it was determined that the Western Charles team won the head to head meetings thus making them the second place team and the ones to face off against SCB in the Championship game.
Shouldn’t there at least be a play-in game? While I understand that because a lot of the higher weight divisions don’t have enough teams because of kids going to the Beltway League and other reasons, still having some type of playoffs is still a good thing for the league. There are 5 teams in the 85lb. weight division and 3 of them are pretty good, but even with that said, why can’t there be a playoff game between the top 4 teams or at least give the #1 team a bye and let #2 and #3 face off in the playoffs. I talked with 85lb. Jr. coach of SCB and the Champs of that division; Brandon Proctor, and he even suggested to me that there should be at least a play-in game if not a full blown playoff system. The same scenario is being played out in the 85lb. Senior division also, where SCB 10-0 will face So. Maryland 6-4 although LaPlata also 6-4 had no chance with no playoffs.
In the playoffs is where memories happen, where upsets take place, and where players step up. I know there might be coaches and parents that might not want another game but I guarantee you it’s not the coaches or parents of that 85lb. junior 7-3 Westlake team who are on the outside looking in just wishing they had another shot to be the Champs.
Good Luck SCB …. Let’s bring it home!
Brandon Proctor and his 85lb. Junior team will play this Saturday 11/12 at Northpoint H.S @ 12:30pm
